The 2020 college football season has been weird and chaotic, nothing is normal or regular. The home-field advantage has been taken away by COVID-19 and reduced to limited capacity attendance. But actually, there is one thing that is normal or regular, par for the course if you will. And that is the Alabama Crimson Tide (6–0) is once again one of the top two or three teams in college football. Here is everything you need to know about the Alabama offense.
The Alabama Offense
Scoring Points, Early and Often
After six games this season, and six wins, Bama is scoring 47 points per game and leading the nation in scoring offense. They have scored 40+ points in three straight games against Georgia, Tennessee, and a 41–0 blowout of Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide has also scored 52 points vs Texas A&M and 63 points vs Ole Miss.
Offensive Coordinator Steve Sarkisian calls the plays for this juggernaut. Alabama is ranked #3 in the FBS in total offense, averaging a whopping 555 yards per game (by comparison, that total is still almost 100 yards less than the average total offense numbers put up by the FBS-leading UCF Knights at 652).
The Crimson Tide has so far executed 419 offensive plays and gained 3,331 yards.
Many Weapons on Offense
Alabama has many weapons on offense. They did lose WR/KR Jaylen Waddle to a season-ending injury in the Tennessee game. But the cupboard is far from bare. With weapons like QB Mac Jones, RB Najee Harris, WR DeVonta Smith, and the emergence of WR John Metchie III, there is an embarrassment of riches on the offensive side of the ball.
Jones has thrown for 2196 yards, 16 TDs, and only 2 INTs while completing 78% of his passes. He has three games of four passing TDs and produced three consecutive games of 400+yards passing against the Aggies, Ole Miss, and Georgia.
Jones is 3rd in the FBS in passing at 366 yards per game.
Harris has 14 rushing TDs so far this season, rushing for 714 yards. In the win over Ole Miss, he ran for five touchdowns.
Smith has caught 56 balls for 759 yards and 8 TDs. Metchie III has caught 24 passes for 517 yards and 3 TDs, averaging 21 yards per catch.
Big Play Scoring Potential
The Tide has the potential to score on big plays on every snap:
- Missouri: 23 yard TD pass.
- Texas A&M: TD passes of 78, 87, and 63 yards.
- Ole Miss: TD runs of 33 and 39 yards.
- Georgia: TD passes of 40 and 90 yards.
- Tennessee: big yardage pass plays of 30, 45, 25, and 45 yards, and a 20-yard run.
- Mississippi St: TD passes of 35 and 53 yards, along with long pass plays of 31 and 34 yards.
Alabama has a success rate in the red zone of 90%.
Remaining Schedule
If they continue to have success in their season, the Auburn Tigers are the only ranked team remaining on the Alabama conference-only schedule.
They have an open date next weekend before traveling to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers (2–3). They also have games remaining with Kentucky and Arkansas.
